Criterion-based assessment

In Japanese: 観点別評価 (kantenbetsu hyoka)

Definition

Criterion-based assessment (kantenbetsu hyoka) grades each subject on separate criteria, such as knowledge and skills, on a three-level A/B/C scale.

In more detail

In the cumulative record, learning in each subject is recorded per criterion as A (fully satisfactory), B (broadly satisfactory) or C (needs effort).

Under the current Course of Study the three criteria are knowledge and skills; thinking, judgement and expression; and an independent attitude to learning.

These criterion grades underlie the overall grade (hyotei) for each subject. High schools also assess each subject by criterion.

In Classio

In Classio, teachers enter the three criteria as A, B or C for each class they teach, and the results feed report cards and cumulative records.
