Course registration is the process by which students register the courses they will take, based on the timetable, capacity and graduation requirements.

Mainly at universities, junior colleges and vocational schools, it happens in a set period each term. Registration checks timetable clashes, course capacity, prerequisite courses and any cap on credits per term.
Example: during the spring registration period students register required and elective courses; over-subscribed courses go to a lottery and clashing courses cannot be registered.
Seeing which degree-requirement category each course counts toward helps students notice missing credits early.
