Excused absence

In Japanese: 公欠 (koketsu)

Definition

An excused absence (koketsu) is missing class for a reason the school recognises, such as a school event or an official exam, and is kept apart from ordinary absence.

In more detail

The term is not defined in law; each school’s rules decide which reasons count.

In the cumulative record, days the principal recognised as not requiring attendance, such as sitting an entrance exam or a natural disaster, are recorded with suspension and bereavement days, separately from absences.

Universities and vocational schools usually do not count excused classes as absences.

A similar category is the recognised absence (認定欠席) for bereavement, suspension and the like. Whether it is left out of the attendance rate or counted as attended like 公欠 is also set by school rules.

In Classio

In Classio, excused absence (公欠) counts as attended in the attendance rate, and recognised absence (認定欠席: bereavement, suspension, natural disaster, job hunting) is left out of both the rate and missed-class counts. When a request is approved, the records for that period change.
