Bereavement leave

In Japanese: 忌引 (kibiki)

Definition

Bereavement leave (kibiki) is time off school for a relative’s death and funeral, kept apart from ordinary absence.

In more detail

In the cumulative record, bereavement days are recorded with days of suspension, separately from absences for illness and other reasons. Elementary and high-school records have the same item.

National law does not set how many days apply to which relatives; each school’s rules decide.

How to report it and what documents are needed are also set by each school.

The record of the notice needs to reach both the attendance register and the cumulative record.

In Classio

In Classio, bereavement is one of the reasons on an excused-absence request, and once approved it is reflected in the records for that period.
