Teaching hours

In Japanese: 授業時数 (jugyo jisu)

Definition

Teaching hours (jugyo jisu) are the number of class periods taught in each year at elementary and lower secondary schools; the law sets a standard.

In more detail

The standard annual total for elementary schools is 850 periods in year 1, 910 in year 2, 980 in year 3 and 1,015 in each of years 4 to 6 (one period is 45 minutes). Lower secondary schools have a standard of 1,015 in each year.

These are standards; schools build their curriculum from the Course of Study and their local circumstances.

Universities count teaching not in periods but in credits based on study time.

In Classio
