Cloud and on-premises

Cloud (SaaS) systems run in the vendor’s environment and are used over the network. The vendor usually runs the servers and applies updates.

On-premises systems are built and run in the school’s environment. They can be customised freely, but the school carries servers, maintenance and upgrades.

Cloud tends to suit schools that

  • do not want staff to manage servers;
  • want a low start-up cost;
  • use several sites or work off campus;
  • want to reach guardians and students through the same system.

Consider on-premises when

  • deep customisation for unique requirements is needed;
  • your corporation’s policy is to manage its own servers;
  • it must connect to other campus systems over the internal network only.

Personal data is a separate check

Choosing cloud or on-premises does not by itself settle personal-data safety. With cloud, supervising the contractor and the storage location are central; on-premises, the school’s own security measures are.
